Take one child in need of a haircut, 2 shaggy parents similarly aspiring to a little London styling and you have the perfect excuse to visit Nottii Hill Salon at Portobello Market. A haircut here means you can also combine having a grown up wander around the market and kickback-the-years treat into eating a yummy street food lunch.
Banish Childhood Dodgy Haircut Memories
The calm and airy Nottii Hill Salon in Portobello Green Arcade (2 minutes from Ladbroke Grove tube) at the bottom of Portobello Market is run by Caroline who provides a superb opportunity for making a haircut part of a funky day out in London. For all those who remember and vowed never to allow your child to have a pudding bowl haircut or an itchy dry cut fringe experience, this could be the answer to banishing bad childhood memories of dodgy haircuts.
Child-friendly here takes on a different meaning. Children get a tempting, luxury choice of 3 different cars to sit in whilst they have their hair cut. A fire-engine, pink car, and Thomas the Tank Engine, accompanied by beautiful animated entertainments (including my favourite Lost & Found) to watch with numerous toys and gadgets to help any little boy or girl look up, down, straight ahead and of course most importantly sit still! Haircut good behaviour is rewarded with zesty lollipops and Animal Cracker biscuits. Mum and Dad get tea or coffee, and an excuse to munch on those biscuits too.
Hairdresser & Psychologist
Caroline is a Vidal Sassoon trained hairdresser who worked in LA before completing a degree in psychology and opening her Notting Hill hairdressers in 2014. All of this has stood her in good stead for the ‘Notting Hill Mums’ as well as parents like us on the way to Kensington and the museums.
Little A loved the experience, from the silky 101 Dalmatians gown to admiring himself in the mirror and the toy and edible treats. Caroline is quick, patient and gently manages to make even the fringe cut harmless and not too itchy. The style was good, we were looking to go a little shorter, to even up baby fine locks with a recent growth in toddler thick hair. Parents went away looking equally stylish and groomed and very very happy with their new haircuts.
Check out Sasti, for some inspired and affordable children’s clothes which is just a few doors down in the Portobello Green Arcade. It’s listed in Timeout’s Top 10 of Best Children’s Clothes Shop in London.
Lunch at Acklam Village Market
We had a pre-appointment lunch just across the road from the arcade at the Acklam Village Market which offers a cheery collaboration of incredible street food, drink and entertainment from around the world. Even at 1.00 pm we managed to grab a higgledy-piggledy table and chairs outside to sit at, which when thinking toddler+street food equates to happy parents.
Little A loved the experience and enjoyed a good old al fresco boogie on down to the tunes wafting out to us along the breeze and through the bunting. Highly recommend the Marrakesh Kitchen and the Polish Deli; Little A loved his sausage sandwich from the latter.
