If you are desperate to know when winter will end and you believe in the proverb of Candelora, a pinch of Italian folklore meets Church that is rolled with a fine dusting of Judaism and Roman purification rites, the miserable state of the elements today means the end of winter!
“For the Holy Candelora, if it snows or if it rains, we are through with winter, but if there is sunshine or even just a little sun, we are still in the middle of winter”
Candlemass as its name in English suggests is the day when the candles for the year used to be officially blessed in church and is guided by the glorious fact that the days are beginning to visibly lengthen. It’s no coincidence that the 2nd February is halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox.
Our fine way of celebrating this and Day20 #ohdaddyoh was to enjoy a rather succulent and tender roast boar lunch cooked by our friends over at La Grande Quercia Bed and Breakfast. Their tip to un-gamey and melt-in-the-mouth boar, marinate the joint for 2 days with a combination of Italian garden herbs and juniper berries, vinegar and olive oil and pour one bottle of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo over the meat whilst slowly roasting.
